Today we are focusing on Centrum. It has become a household name for kids and adults of all ages, but is this vitamin actually safe for you and your family? You be the judge.
Here are some hidden ingredients found clearly written on the label that you do NOT want coming into your body on a regular basis. Do yourself a favor and always READ THE INGREDIENT LIST before you put any food, drink or supplement into your body, vitamins included!
BHT/butylated hydroxytoluene: a preservative found in cosmetics, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, baked goods, canned items, powdered soups, bacon, foods containing artificial colors and flavors. Some studies reveal it can cause cancer, birth defects and infertility, along with hyperactivity in some children
Boric acid: a chemical compound with widespread use as an antiseptic, flame retardant, insecticide
Crospovidone: a chemical polymer used as a binder in glue, shampoo, toothpaste, paint, hair spray, batteries; commonly found in beer and wine as a stabilizer
FD and C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake: synthetic dye derived from coal tar/petroleum; can contain trace amounts of lead and arsenic. This dye is potentially carcinogenic and has been linked to hyperactivity in young children, along with migraines
Gelatin: protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments and/or bones with water. From cows and pigs
Hydrogenated palm oil: a dangerous saturated fat that can promote heart disease since it results in adverse changes in the blood concentrations of LDL cholesterol just as trans fat does
Hypromellose: a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used in cosmetics, detergents, adhesives
Polyethylene glycol: the basis of a number of laxatives, skin creams, lubricants
Polyvinyl alcohol: a synthetic polymer used for its emulsifying and adhesive properties
Sodium metavanadate: yellow solid used to attract water molecules
Sodium molybdate: used as a corrosion inhibitor and fertilizer
Sodium selenate: currently classified by the FDA and European Union as a toxic chemical upon ingestion that can be deadly in high doses
Sorbic acid: used as a food preservative
Stannous chloride: used as a reducing agent to make tin cans. Also used as a food additive to canned and bottled goods serving as a color-retaining agent
Sucrose: processed table sugar. Tooth decay, diabetes, obesity, gout anyone? The refining process often uses bone char, calcinated animal bones, for decolorizing
Talc: found in many hygiene and cosmetic products, used as a food additive and also to make paper, plastic, paint and coatings, rubber, ceramics; some studies link it’s use to various forms of cancer
Sodium aluminosilicate: an acid salt used as a food additive as an anticaking agent
Sunflower oil: used as an emollient and found in cosmetic formulations. This omega-6 polyunsaturated fat offsets the delicate fat balance in our body and can increase cancer risk in certain studies
