Sleep and Vitamins - What's the Deal?
Details
Written by Dr. Anthony GeraciI am writing this on a plane from New York to Los Angeles. A quick but no doubt grueling turn around. I will try to eat three meals and get sleep on the red eye back to New York but I’m sure my brain and body will pay a price. So, is sleep and proper nutrition really that important for a normal functioning brain?
You bet!
The way I see it, we start life with a million dollars worth of brain cells. Each time we take a few pennies here and a few bucks there, we deplete the balance in our brain banks. Do we ever deposit “brain money”? Sure. We go to school and learn, we live life and enjoy the richness of experience. Some of us meditate or do yoga or get regular exercise. All of these are “deposits” into our brain banks. So, just to keep the balance even, we have to get regular sleep and eat nutritious meals that provide our brains with the nutrients it needs to thrive. For many of us, both of these are challenges. Our busy lives in the modern world, the bombardment of television and the internet, and the unprecedented ability to travel all over the world has changed the sleeping patterns of many humans. We then make the situation worse by taking sleeping pills which will ALWAYS end you up in a bad place. Learning how to naturally go to sleep and stay asleep is the best way to go and it can be done by everyone. We developed our sleep therapy course on this website just for that purpose.
Nutrition is equally important. Our brains are extremely metabolically active. Fully 20% of our cardiac output (the amount of blood pumped through the heart) is destined for our brains on a daily basis –even while we sleep. Our brains need many enzymes, minerals and vitamins to maintain proper function and if they are not present, the system tends to work less efficiently. So, taking daily vitamins isn’t just a fad. And taking nutrients and supplements specifically designed for your brain’s needs is mandatory if you want to function at your best. Whether you have a chronic pain condition or neurological condition or you just want to keep your brain’s bank balance as high as possible for as long as possible, take you vitamins and supplements.
