Centrum bottleToday we are focusing on Centrum. It has become a household name for kids and adults of all ages, but is this vitamin actually safe for you and your family? You be the judge.

Here are some hidden ingredients found clearly written on the label that you do NOT want coming into your body on a regular basis. Do yourself a favor and always READ THE INGREDIENT LIST before you put any food, drink or supplement into your body, vitamins included!

BHT/butylated hydroxytoluene: a preservative found in cosmetics, jet fuels, rubber, petroleum products, baked goods, canned items, powdered soups, bacon, foods containing artificial colors and flavors. Some studies reveal it can cause cancer, birth defects and infertility, along with hyperactivity in some children

Boric acid: a chemical compound with widespread use as an antiseptic, flame retardant, insecticide

Crospovidone: a chemical polymer used as a binder in glue, shampoo, toothpaste, paint, hair spray, batteries; commonly found in beer and wine as a stabilizer

FD and C Yellow No. 6 Aluminum Lake: synthetic dye derived from coal tar/petroleum; can contain trace amounts of lead and arsenic. This dye is potentially carcinogenic and has been linked to hyperactivity in young children, along with migraines

Gelatin: protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments and/or bones with water. From cows and pigs

Hydrogenated palm oil: a dangerous saturated fat that can promote heart disease since it results in adverse changes in the blood concentrations of LDL cholesterol just as trans fat does

Hypromellose: a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used in cosmetics, detergents, adhesives

Polyethylene glycol: the basis of a number of laxatives, skin creams, lubricants

Polyvinyl alcohol: a synthetic polymer used for its emulsifying and adhesive properties

Sodium metavanadate: yellow solid used to attract water molecules

Sodium molybdate: used as a corrosion inhibitor and fertilizer

Sodium selenate: currently classified by the FDA and European Union as a toxic chemical upon ingestion that can be deadly in high doses

Sorbic acid: used as a food preservative

Stannous chloride: used as a reducing agent to make tin cans. Also used as a food additive to canned and bottled goods serving as a color-retaining agent

Sucrose: processed table sugar. Tooth decay, diabetes, obesity, gout anyone? The refining process often uses bone char, calcinated animal bones, for decolorizing

Talc: found in many hygiene and cosmetic products, used as a food additive and also to make paper, plastic, paint and coatings, rubber, ceramics; some studies link it’s use to various forms of cancer

Sodium aluminosilicate: an acid salt used as a food additive as an anticaking agent

Sunflower oil: used as an emollient and found in cosmetic formulations. This omega-6 polyunsaturated fat offsets the delicate fat balance in our body and can increase cancer risk in certain studies

Overall rating: 2/10

Who needs extra sugars, oils, and toxins each and every morning? These fillers mask the good stuff that we are trying to get more of into our bodies in the first place! I would not recommend the use of this product after taking a closer look at what is in it – would YOU?
