One of the tests you will need and can be conveniently done in our offices is an EEG.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the recording of electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons within the brain. In clinical contexts, EEG refers to the recording of the brain's spontaneous electrical activity over a short period of time, usually 20–40 minutes, as recorded from multiple electrodes placed on the scalp. This is a simple and painless procedure as seen in the picture on the left. In neurology, the main diagnostic application of EEG is in the case of epilepsy, as epileptic activity can create clear abnormalities on a standard EEG study. Dr. Geraci uses the information obtained from this test to determine if you might have seizures as an explanation for your symtpoms, and also to monitor the effectiveness of medications in patients with epilepsy.

Sometimes the routine 20 minute EEG will be normal, even though the patient DOES have epilepsy or seizures. If this is the case in your situation, the doctors may want to monitor you with an ambulatory EEG which you go home with for 24 to 72 hours. This gives the doctors a much longer duration of brain wave monitoring to look at and to make a diagnosis.
