Many patients with migraine headache find that some foods (many that taste yummy!) are no good for their headaches. These are called "Food Triggers". Everyone is different and will have a different list of foods that set off their migraines, and some people have no triggers at all. Even so, the following list can be used as a guide for those patients who have never tried an elimination diet to reduce their headache frequency and severity.
-
Caffeine (coffee, tea, etc.)
-
Chocolate (light or dark)
-
Nuts (with the possible exception of almonds)
-
Citrus (orange juice, oranges, grapefruits, etc.)
-
Pickled foods
-
MSG (monosodium glutamet) and most preservatives with nitrates, nitrites and sulfated compounds: these include chinese food but also many other foods: processed an packaged meals, frozen meals, deli and smoked meats such as pepperoni, pastrami, bacon, hot dogs
-
Soda (any type, diet or otherwise)
-
Bananas
-
Avocados
-
A high carbohydrate diet, with alot of processed carbs (white flour)
-
Red wine
Other triggers include lack of sleep or irregular sleep habits, emotional stress, weather changes (particular just prior to stormy weather), bright lights (fluorescent), perfumes and other sharp odors.
At neurOasis, Dr. Geraci will address possible triggers and work with you to eliminate them from your daily routine. You may also be prescribed a course of alternative therapies such as chiropractic care, physical therapy, Reiki, meditation or acupuncture. And if warranted, some patients make periodic visits to the office for intravenous infusion of medications and minerals such as magnesium or steroids; as well as our vitamin and anti-oxidant IV infusion program. Each patient will be given a comfortable forum in which to choose which recommendation is most appropriate for them and their lifestyle.
